A border that connects
From Marienbad it is half an hour's drive to the Bavarian border — and beyond it opens the Upper Palatinate, a land of monasteries, granite castles and the Zoigl beer culture. A trip "to Germany" is thus shorter than the drive to Karlovy Vary. Five destinations worth crossing for — no passport drama, just a steering wheel.
1. Waldsassen Abbey — the library carried by atlantes
By car: 30 minutes | Time on site: 1.5–3 hours
The Cistercian abbey of Waldsassen ranks among the summits of Bavarian baroque, and its library hall plays in the world league: ten life-size lime-wood atlantes bear the gallery, each embodying a human failing. The magnificent basilica holds the largest crypt north of the Alps. Outside the gate: cafés and the abbey shop run by the Cistercian sisters.
2. The Kappl — the Trinity church on the hill
By car: 30 minutes (5 minutes from Waldsassen) | Time on site: 30–60 minutes
Above Waldsassen, a building straight out of a fairy tale rises from the fields: the pilgrimage church of the Holy Trinity, which Georg Dientzenhofer constructed rigorously on the number three. Three onion-domed towers, three apses, a circular nave — and a view reaching to Dyleň mountain on clear days. Pairs perfectly with Waldsassen for a half-day.
3. Sibyllenbad — thermal relaxation across the border
By car: 25 minutes | Time on site: 2–4 hours
The nearest Bavarian destination is also the most restful: the thermal baths at Neualbenreuth with mineral pools, whirlpools, a sauna world and an oriental steam bath. A complement to the Marienbad cure that works in any weather — and pleasantly quiet in the early evening.
4. Bärnau History Park — time travel to the Middle Ages
By car: 35 minutes | Time on site: 2–4 hours
Germany's largest archaeological open-air museum reconstructs life in the early and high Middle Ages: a 9th-century Slavic village, a motte-and-bailey tower and craftspeople who weave, forge and bake exactly as people did a thousand years ago. The park sits right on the historic Golden Road from Prague to Nuremberg — with children you can easily spend the whole day.
5. Parkstein — Humboldt's marvel
By car: 50 minutes | Time on site: 1–2 hours
The farthest, but worth the drive: a thirty-metre wall of basalt columns that Alexander von Humboldt declared the most beautiful in Europe. A chapel with wide views on top, a volcano museum and inns serving Upper Palatinate cooking below. On the way back, stop at Falkenberg Castle, which grows straight out of granite boulders.
Practical notes
An ID card suffices; you cross the border without stopping. Bavaria uses the euro — cards work almost everywhere, but smaller inns and Zoigl taverns appreciate cash. Find all the cross-border destinations in our day-trips catalogue.
